The Andes, rising close to the coast and continuing toward the Amazon Basin, were a constant presence for the Moche people and were considered sacred to them. They were earth's contact with the sky, and they housed caves, which were thought of as entrances to the underworld. Mountains were therefore a frequent motif in Moche art.
